Description:
NVS provides a unique service offering advice and information as well as providing learning, social and wellbeing activity groups. We offer practical and emotional support covering all aspects of living with sight loss. We want to ensure that our members feel part of a friendly, inclusive support network which understands their needs and encourages participation in all aspects of community life. Vision impairment can have a profound impact on every aspect of life ranging from the practicalities of every-day life, employment as well as social, mental and general physical wellbeing. We strive to be a service-user led organisation, responding to the changing needs of our members. Participation in supported group activities helps reduce feelings of social isolation and anxiety, improves confidence, and promotes physical and mental wellbeing. NVS operates from MEA House in Newcastle which offers a safe, central, and accessible meeting place for our service users. Our activity groups are led by our experienced activity co-ordinator and aim to provide a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment for our service-users to socialise, learn and feel part of a supported community. Our activity groups include: a creative art workshop, yoga, walking group, chair exercises, Macular degeneration group, ‘Knit and Natter’ and CU Wednesday (social groups). In addition to social and activity groups, we also provide benefit advice, IT support to our service-users, and provide training in the use of assistive technology devices for those with vision impairment (for example, computer screen readers, talking scales, watches, timers etc). We also offer Safeguarding support. Our demonstration kitchen area allows us to provide practical training on basic kitchen skills and safety, using assistive devices. We also provide a comprehensive ‘vision matters’ course to those who have been recently diagnosed with vision impairment. This course aims to equip people with information about services, opportunities and equipment which are available to help them make informed choices and to maintain their independence. The course offers attendees the opportunity to meet others facing similar challenges, providing peer support and the chance to develop friendships, resulting in reduced social isolation.all groups are free
